Dario Amodei asked AI labs to slow down. Three answers this week:
Trump, by phone, live on Jensen Huang's stage: "It's a hoax."
Zuckerberg: every lab can handle safety itself.
Musk: let rivals, including China's, test your models first.

"It's a hoax." NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang was on a stage in Los Angeles when his phone rang. He held it up to the microphone. On the line: Trump. "It's a hoax. The robots are not going to take over the world," the US president said in the five-minute call. Anyone who wants to slow down "is playing into the hands of people who don't want to see it succeed. People with a political agenda, and China." Huang himself, a week after calling Astra the beginning of AGI, on the 10 percent chance of extinction cited by Anthropic researchers: "Whistleblowing is fine. A scientific prediction about the future is less fine, because it's clearly not based on science." As far as he's concerned the labs are welcome to slow down, voluntarily, "if they feel it's getting out of hand on their end."
"Every lab can do this itself." Mark Zuckerberg broke with the other labs on Tuesday: competition and liability give companies enough reason to build safely, and a coordinated slowdown isn't needed. "Any lab that doesn't focus on alignment will fall behind." According to him, Meta devotes "the vast majority" of its compute to users rather than to self-improving AI, and held back its agent Muse for months for safety reasons: "We didn't go around saying everyone had to do that. We just did it."
"Let competitors check your homework." Elon Musk, who wrote "Dario is right" on Saturday, came out Monday with a plan of his own: have the major US labs and "three or four of the leading Chinese companies" test each other's models before release. "Instead of grading your own homework, your competitors grade it." He thinks China would take part. His competitors haven't agreed to this yet.
