I learned early that a good idea rarely guarantees survival. After launching early initiatives I found two practical levers that matter: repeatable operational rhythms and access to mentors who help navigate inevitable pivots.
The Inspiring Founders Podcast digs into these realities with founders who share what actually worked and what didn’t. If you want practical takeaways, subscribe and listen. If you want to get more involved in the startup ecosystem, send me a message. #founders

I’ve spent the better part of 25 years trying to understand two things: which problems are worth solving, and what is the simplest way to solve them. That pursuit has led me to start companies, build products, teach entrepreneurship, coach hundreds of founders, and participate in four startup exits—one as a founder and three as an advisor. Along the way, I noticed a pattern. Founders are usually very good at solving problems. The trouble is that we’re often solving the wrong ones. What looks like a sales problem might really be positioning. A marketing problem might begin with not understanding the customer. An execution problem might simply be too many priorities competing for attention. I came to think of this as finding the problem under the problem. When you find it, complicated decisions get simpler, teams align, and a surprising amount of work disappears. Today I coach founders and startup teams around the world to do exactly that. Sometimes it’s a team scaling a company worth billions. Sometimes it’s one person turning what they know into a consulting business. The scale changes, but the work is remarkably similar. Find the problem worth solving. Find the simplest way through it. Then get on with the work that matters.
SJSU students: this is a practical way to get involved and experience entrepreneurship while you're in college. If you're an early-stage founder or curious about startups, join SpartUp Founder Fiesta on 3/12 for a panel discussion hosted by the SpartUp Incubator.
As a founder and long-time mentor, I've learned that early customer feedback and mentorship shape are the fastest way to go to market.

Looking for experienced professionals and entrepreneurs to mentor early-stage teams as they prepare for Launchpad on May 13, 2026 at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Mentors will help sharpen pitches, validate ideas, and build founder confidence before the live competition and job fair.
I'm also building my list of Mentors for Santa Cruz Accelerates Cohort 7 (mentoring seed-stage startups with traction)
From my experience, targeted feedback early brings clarity and faster decision making for teams and fresh perspective for mentors. If you can help, send me a message. #mentorship

Great night at Santa Cruz Works New Tech, sold out on March 4. I pitched Radi8 and heard rapid-fire demos from Innovation Within, BrandCapsule, Activity Ally, and The Host Mindset. Thanks to Comcast Business and Wynn Capital for sponsoring.
Two quick takeaways: focus your demo on the customer problem and one clear outcome; use events to recruit pilot partners and collect direct feedback. If you are working on early product-market fit or want pilot introductions, send me a message. #startups

Controversy can be a growth signal if you plan for it. Anthropic was aligned with their values, they faced regulatory pushback, and customers rewarded them.
Company culture and values matter more than you think. Here are some tips for founders:
1) Define non-negotiables and why they matter to users.
2) Build a response playbook for regulatory or PR scrutiny.
3) Turn backlash into learnings: capture why users care and make sure you're aligned ethically and strategically.
Send me a message if you want to map a launch plan. #product

From running small growth experiments at startups, I learned that local businesses do best when attention is tied to action. Flip's approach, building simple systems that link social posts, customer data, and basic automation, turns organic interest into predictable, trackable revenue without paid ads. Practical steps: map the post-to-sale journey, capture contact data early, automate low-friction follow-up, and measure conversions not impressions. If you are testing organic channels, send me a message. #startups

I read "Santa Cruz is not Silicon Valley (and we don't want to be.)" and it landed for me. From launching startups and local programs I've learned you can build world-class companies while staying rooted in the place and values that matter. Practical moves that helped teams here: get customer feedback early, hire flexibly to keep local talent, run small paid pilots, and build mentor networks. Send me a message.

Congratulations to Parallel Flight Technologies for clearing a major FAA hurdle and preparing to bring the Firefly heavy-lift hybrid drone into U.S. commercial service.
As a founder, this milestone underscores three practical lessons for regulated hardware: engage regulators early, build tests that reflect operational conditions, and run pilot deployments with actual end users.

Reading CarbonBridge’s 2026 forecast, I’m encouraged by their shift from R&D to early commercialization. Two practical lessons for founders: secure non-dilutive reimbursements or early contracts to fund operations, and start pilot-site planning well before you expect to raise. Their first product sales to Lawrence Berkeley Lab validate the path, while fundraising and pilot timing remain bottlenecks. If you’re building pilots or need introductions, send me a message.

UCSC's Innovation Catalyst program is advancing multi-virus diagnostics and energy-efficient electronics. From my experience launching startups and partnering with research labs, translating breakthroughs into products requires three focused actions: validate the clinical or market need early; align engineering and commercialization roadmaps; secure pilots that surface real-world constraints. If you lead a startup or university program navigating that path, send me a message to compare notes. #innovation

Last chance: buy tickets today and get a free glass of bubbly from the Chaminade.
I'll be presenting at the Santa Cruz Works New Tech on March 4.
Networking starts at 6 pm with music, food, and real conversation; rapid-fire startup demos begin at 7 pm from Innovation Within, BrandCapsule, Radi8, Activity Ally, and The Host Mindset.
As a CEO I learned that short demos force clarity, so focus on the problem you solve and the next milestone. Let's see if I can put my money where my mouth is... or is it my mouth where the money is!
Sponsored by Comcast Business and Wynn Capital. See you there.

Connected University, a Santa Cruz experiment, treats online publishing as an embodied learning space rather than a distraction machine. Short multimedia handbooks—readable in 20–30 minutes and paired with audio, ambient music, visual design and centering practices—are shared openly through voluntary stewardship rather than paywalls.
From launching startup programs I learned shorter, ritualized learning experiences drive engagement and invite community stewardship. If you are redesigning learning or pilot programs, send me a message to compare notes. #learning
