There are millions of people who don't want to build companies with hundreds of employees. They want to build a great business around something they're exceptionally good at. They want to coach. Consult. Practice. Create. Build. Teach. They want to own their work, their time, and ultimately more of their lives. But there's a catch. The moment you become independent, you inherit all the responsibilities that used to belong to an organization. You don't just have to be great at your craft. You have to build a brand. Who have you actually watched build the startup you're trying to build? Saeed Amidi makes a point about Stanford I keep coming back to: the reason so many students there start companies is that they grow up seeing it as normal. A graduate feels they could just as easily go build the next Google as go get a job at one. He points to the poster children — Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Bill Hewlett, Dave Packard. When you can see people like you doing it, building becomes something you can picture yourself doing. I launched the startup incubator at San José State, where I still teach. Same engineering talent as anywhere. Far fewer startups. The gap isn't intellect... it's whether or not students believe they can do it. The same dynamic runs for anyone starting a business. Which room are you the most knowledgeable person in? Passion isn't enough anymore. AI already knows the generalist version of what you know, and it answers instantly, which means the floor just rose for everyone. Broad knowledge is a commodity now, and the coaches and consultants who trade only on enthusiasm and general competence are getting squeezed between a search bar and a subscription. What AI can't replicate is genuine mastery.
