Where did all your clients go? The real question is, “Where did you go?”
A big contract, a few good clients, a full calendar... and staying visible starts to feel optional.
When the work is going well, showing up for everyone who isn't paying you drops to the bottom of the list.
How do I know? I’ve done it and it sucks
In 1998 I spent months building relationships with advertising agencies, looking for work. It paid off. I landed a great contract and started building web apps for PayPal, HP, and a handful of other big names. So I stopped pounding the pavement and worked tirelessly on the projects instead.
When that agency lost its contracts the projects ended.
It took me a year to get back to where I'd been. And that year was spent explaining to my network why I'd been gone so long.
If you’re a consultant or coach you need to maintain visibility to build and maintain trust.
Clients come from relationships and showing up builds the relationships. Relationships build the trust... that's the flywheel.
When you stop showing up, the flywheel doesn't throw a warning. It just slows, and you don't notice until the work dries up and you're rebuilding from zero.
Show up consistently, not just when you need work.
Btw: Golf is a great way to keep showing up!! So let me know if you want to play.
